Initials - S F. Country of birth - Italy. First pair at 9 years. Opened his first shop at 14 with 6 assistants. Ambition took him to the USA at 16 years.
“He made shoes from hummingbird feathers and tree bark, carved prow-shaped toes that resembled sued parrot beaks, fashioned heels to look like corkscrews and, after the discovery of King Tut’s tomb, inverted pyramids”
He invented a steel arch support to make shoes comfortable after studying anatomy.
His most famous invention was the cork wedge which paved the way for platform shoes which he fashioned during the war.
He died in 1960 and left behind 350 patents and a reputation for revolutionizing the modern shoe business.
In his autobiography he wrote “I am very happy to have made the humble trade of shoemaker respectable” |
