SHOE REPAIR

The perfect match is not always made in heaven

The perfect match is not always made in heaven. Shoe repairers cut more keys than locksmiths. Keys are cut at all sorts of retail outlets. The frustration can be high at times about the quality of service and product. Firstly, the quality of the steel in the key needs to be considered – some steel is stronger than other steel. Secondly, the range of key blanks is often a frustration – where as the repairer who is not a locksmith will not have all the keys a locksmith would have, they do have quite a broad range and will check to make sure the blank to be cut does in fact match the original. Thirdly the key which is cut has to match the original. How many times have had a key cut and it does not open the lock when you get home!

After considering the steel quality and the range required to provide a quality service, the cutting of the key is of next importance to the quality shoe repairer. To match the blank to the original – there is knowledge and experience just to know the one and then there is the eye which does the final check before the cut.

In the case of a repairer not being able to make the match readily, there are books and computer programs and other repairers to check against, so that codes can be checked and the correct blank found. Having identified the correct blank the cutting is the next skill. With new keys coming onto the market all the time repairers also aim to keep up with the current key cutting machines. So with the original and blank in hand the new key is cut. The perfect match is all about – the head, the rim, the stop, the stern, the tip, the back and the cuts of the key. All the technical detail doesn’t matter to the customer but it does matter that the key will work in the lock! So good argument to seek a quality service
